Artist Residency Presentation by Irma Sofia Poeter

Kunstquartier Bethanien, rm 134
Mariannenplatz 2, Berlin
Irma Sofía Poeter is a Mexican American artist who has lived on both sides of the San Diego-Tijuana border. For her Artist Residency at MOMENTUM-LAGOS, Poeter brought a selection of recent works, entitles NEW MAN, A WOMAN’S GAZE, to present in dialogue with new work created in Berlin. “It’s a GIRL! Opening one door and closing another” is closely related to the “New Man” series – a body of work that explores the possibility of deconstructing hegemonic masculinity and opts for alternative masculinities in which ways of being and existing in the world stand out differently. With the performance “It’s a GIRL!”, Poeter starts to imagine the deconstruction of that hegemonic masculinity in women. How can we alter, transform, recreate this structure? As more women enter and thrive in this vertical and patriarchal system, we are just conforming and settling into the same system we are revolting from. Who is this New Woman that embraces both her masculine and feminine and projects that balance into the creation of a new and harmonious world? These are some of the topics Poeter explores during her Artist Residency at MOMENTUM-LAGOS.

Intelligence vs Consciousness
Artist Residency Presentation by Raúl Cerrillo
1 September 2023 @ 6 – 9pm
@ MOMENTUM-LAGOS
Kunstquartier Bethanien, rm 134
Mariannenplatz 2, Berlin
With his paintings, sculptures and installations, the Mexican artist Raúl Cerrillo builds a bridge between the past of our ancient cultures and the future that can be expected from today’s technological age. The syncretism expressed in his works speaks of the importance of blending different cultures and traditions to connect with ourselves and with other people. In this context, he proposes new myths and archetypes to help us find our own way.
Parallel to his Artist Residency at MOMENTUM-LAGOS,
Raúl Cerrillo holds an exhibition at Mexican Embassy:

Mahsa Foroughi
15 June – 15 November 2022
ARTIST BIO:
Mahsa Foroughi is a published Persian poet, filmmaker, critic and architect. She was awarded her PhD for interdisciplinary research on architecture, film and philosophy that questioned the status quo of humans’ perception. As an academic, she has been teaching architecture history and theory at UNSW since 2018. Mahsa is one of the authors of The Theatre Times, a non-partisan, global theatre portal. Mahsa has recently been offered an artist residency in Berlin to develop and produce her docudrama A Poetic Suicide. She has also finished her first non-fiction book, Haptic Visuality in Arts. She previously engaged with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), National Art School (NAS) and Carriageworks as a literary curator’s assistant.
A POETIC SUICIDE
For her Artist Residency project at MOMENTUM, Iranian filmmaker and poet Mahsa Foroughi undertakes research for the production of her new film, A Poetic Suicide. Set in three seminal cities spanning three continents – Tehran, Sydney, and Berlin – this work commingles the bitter truths of history and the poetic license of fiction to address individual and collective memory, trauma and healing, dream and reality. Based on a young poet’s life in post-revolutionary Iran, and then in Europe and Australia, A Poetic Suicide explores a young girl’s attempt to escape the trauma of persecution through an inner journey taking her to her most terrible memories and fears. The film traces the poet’s growth from a rebellious teenager in Iran to a desperate young woman in Australia, and onwards through her family connection to Berlin. Shot on location and also using found documentary footage, this film is designed as visual poetry comingling historical fact with fictional dreamscapes.

Hannu Karjalainen Performs His Visual Album LUXE @ 7pm
Karjalainen presents a live rendition of his most recent work, the audiovisual project LUXE, released by Berlin record label Karaoke Kalk in December 2021. While STATES of EMERGENCY poses the question “What is the role of the artist in a state of emergency?”, Hannu Karjalainen’s new visual album LUXE is inspired by a parallel question, addressing “whether being able to make art in times when the world is quite literally burning must be understood as a luxury or rather a necessity that helps humans to reflect upon the slowly unfolding catastrophes around them?”

MOMENTUM is proud to screen its 10th Anniversary Exhibition, COVIDecameron, on the art film platform ikonoTV. Having made the initial edition of this online exhibition during the first pandemic lockdown in May 2020, now, during the second lockdown in December, we are happy to share this timely exhibition with diverse audiences around the globe thanks to our longterm partner, ikonoTV. With the eyes and hearts of the world locked onto the terrible aftermath of COVID-19, MOMENTUM gathers 19 exceptional artists from its Collection to show 24 video artworks re-contextualized through the prism of life at the time of Corona. This exhibition of art from elsewhere is a contemplation upon the poetry of the day-to-day as it relates to the changing world we inhabit.

Rethinking Roles and Practices in the Arts
The BAUHAUS Edition
@ Salon Villa Erxleben
Gallery KLEINERVONWIESE

As this 100th year of the Bauhaus draws to a close in December, please join us for Double Agents 4: the Bauhaus edition
with
Wulf Herzogenrath
renowned art historian, curator, museum director, on his book
“The Bauhaus Does Not Exist”
&
David Szauder
on his sculpture after Moholy-Nagy, “Light Space Modulator”
Bauhaus teachers and Bauhaus students were always “double agents”, because their goal went far beyond the fine arts into shaping the future. The Bauhaus wanted to conceive the new on a verifiable basis, test the future, design the feasible. From 1919 to 1933, inspired not least by the changes in its directors, Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe, it underwent several fundamental changes, which Wulf Herzogenrath dissects in his central thesis on the five phases of the Bauhaus.
While David Szauder reimagines for the present day the classic of Bauhaus design, “Light Space Modulator” – the kinetic light and sound sculpture by one of the founding fathers of the Bauhaus, Moholy-Nagy.

In Cooperation With
In 2017 with the theme “vs. Meat”, Berlin Food Art Week addresses topics such as human and animal rights, conscious consumption, environmental issues and sustainability. We are many, and as we all must eat, our diet has a huge influence on our environment. How we deal with our nature and animals, the overproduction, food quality, the impact on the planet and its cultures? These are the issues that are brought to the stage, using art and food to bring attention and awareness.
Inverting the vegetarian premise of this edition of Food Art Week, MOMENTUM uses the occasion of our partnership to engage with five artists from the MOMENTUM Collection and our Artist Residency Program (MOMENTUM AiR) who work with meat as an artistic medium, and as an effective commentary upon cultural practices and taboos. Raw meat, the very visceral building block of all animal life, whether in a kitchen or under a surgeon’s knife, is a substance which in some elicits hunger, in others disgust. Indifference is not an option – especially in this exhibition where the artists each in their own way, some gruesome and others humorous, subvert the loaded meanings of meat.
